Shopping Small This Holiday Season

It’s here! Like it or not, we’re fully immersed in the holiday season. At every turn, we see new commercials and billboards, social media ads and pop-ups and it’s oh so intoxicating. But with so many products and companies, have you ever stopped to think about the story behind that ad or that product or even that company? If you’re anything like me, the answer would be “no". At least, it would have in the past. And while I’m still far from being the most conscious consumer, I’m noticing a heck of a lot more now how much power we have with our purchasing.
I used to not think twice about where I spent my money. I can totally relate to wanting something cheap and fast and I admittedly still breeze through buying some things out of habit. But my eyes were opened as I researched and developed the blingsling® and the way I look at products will never be the same.
Of course, there are many large companies who have perfected a conscious way of bringing affordable and convenient products to the masses and I say RESPECT. But for every respectable company, there’s an ethically questionable business out there, too. With all the harmful and unethical things going on around us, it’s our responsibility to do some research before supporting a business.
One of the easiest ways to know you’re putting your purchasing power towards something good is by shopping small. Your dollars are directly affecting people and have the best chance to make a difference in the world we live in.
For Clever Designs LA, it means more fair wage jobs in the U.S. and donations to empower women and girls through Step Up Women's Network. For many small businesses, it means supporting a family or your local neighborhood. More often than not, when you shop small, you're contributing to a movement much bigger than the store. You're endorsing products and services made with integrity and love that goes far beyond the dollar amount.
So as we maneuver our way through this gift-giving season, let’s take a second to consider how and where our gift was made so we can support the right causes and spread more goodness around the world.
